The core Garmin apps — Garmin Drive, Garmin Explore, and the Garmin Dash Cam app — are free downloads. I won’t pretend otherwise. The cost shows up in deployment, not download.
For our first 18 dash cams, we let drivers install the app on their personal phones. It worked until a driver quit and we couldn’t access footage tied to his account. That cost us a customer dispute, plus a support afternoon we didn’t plan for.
Now we treat app setup as an installation task. A company-owned phone or tablet is assigned to each vehicle, the apps are pre-configured, and credentials stay in our IT vault. The app didn’t cost money. The policy around it did.

We use the Mini 2 / Mini 3 family in cars where we want the camera tucked behind the mirror and out of sight. We use the Tandem when we need both a road view and a cabin view — training vehicles, for example. The X110 / X210 / X310 line makes sense when we want more integration options, including rear-cam wiring and, on certain models, live features in one Garmin ecosystem.
But here’s the cost-controller part: unit price was only 55–65% of our total per-vehicle cost. The rest was mounts, high-endurance microSD cards (they fail faster in hot vehicles), hardwire kits, longer cables for vans, and install labor. We initially installed rear cameras in our long-wheelbase vans with the vehicles on the ground. Bad idea. Our tech’s back disagreed, and the install time was painful. We bought a used mid-rise lift, and rear-cam installs got faster and safer.

A proper hardwire kit with a low-voltage cutoff is usually the better first purchase. It protects your vehicle battery without adding a second battery to manage.
Now, if you already need a portable power station for tools, jump-starting, or field equipment, that’s a different conversation. We carry them in service vans for reasons unrelated to cameras. Solar panels extend that usefulness only if the vehicle sits in direct sun — covered lots erase the benefit. Calculate the cost across all loads, not just the dash cam.

I only believe this now because I ignored it once. In 2023, a lower-priced quote came in about $2,100 under our usual Garmin distributor quote. It didn’t include high-endurance memory cards, two vehicle-specific mounts, or the wiring harnesses we needed for long-wheelbase vans. We spent $2,700 on change orders, and the install schedule slipped two weeks. The “cheap” path cost more, and it made us look disorganized in front of operations.
Line items I now request on every quote: microSD cards, extra mounts, mounting tape, hardwire kits, install time, any live-data subscription or trial end date, and firmware updates if fleet management is part of the deal. A vendor who lists those upfront — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end.
