Two Mistakes That Undo a Good Kit
Who This Checklist Is For
If you are equipping service vans, a sales fleet, or vehicles that sit outdoors overnight, this article is for you. I have spent nine years coordinating roadside recovery for a logistics company. That is more than 400 calls, from dead batteries in parking garages to a delivery truck with a cracked oil pan.
Everything I read about emergency kits said the first item should be a first-aid kit. In practice, the equipment that actually gets a vehicle moving is a jump starter, a dash cam that works, and a navigation plan that does not depend on a full cell signal. You should still carry first aid. But the order matters when the budget is tight.
Below is the six-step baseline we use for our company vehicles. I included specific gear names because a generic emergency kit is not a spec.
Step 1: Start With a Jump Starter, Not a Toolkit
Most of our winter roadside events are battery-related, not mechanical failures. A portable jump starter is basically the difference between a five-minute stop and an hour waiting for a road-service partner.

The Vantrue JS1 car jump starter has been in our work vans since late 2024. It is compact, the cables store in the unit, and it started a 6.0-liter V8 work van on a cold morning. The phrase cables store in the unit sounds minor until someone cannot find the cables at 6:00 a.m.
Costco Type S Jump Starter Review
For the office-pool cars, we bought six Costco Type S jump starters in early 2025. Here is my short review: all six held a charge in the March 2026 audit, and three had actually been used to start other cars. I did not expect that. The main negative is the storage bag, which is too small once the cables are coiled neatly. That small flaw is exactly the kind of thing that makes a kit look unused and then, suddenly, unready.
What I mean is: pick a unit that matches your vehicle list and put one in every car. Not in the warehouse. Not in the driver's personal truck. In the vehicle.
Checkpoint: each vehicle has a jump starter rated for its engine, and the driver knows where it is stored.
Step 2: Install a Dash Cam People Will Actually Leave Alone
Dash cams are common in fleets. But if a camera is bulky, visible, or mounted with a suction cup, it ends up in the glove box. We chose the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 for our vans specifically to avoid that problem.
The Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 is genuinely small. It fits behind the rearview mirror and records in 1080p. There is no screen to attract attention. Footage is available through the Garmin Drive app, which is useful after an incident.
(Should mention: the installer matters more than the camera. We had one van where the Mini 2 was aimed too low, so the footage was almost all hood. Correct aiming has to be checked at installation and after anyone cleans the windshield.)
If a driver says the dash cam is not working, check the memory card first. That is the cause in nearly every returned unit. Use a high-endurance card from the supported list and replace it every two years.

Step 3: Top GPS Navigation Apps 2025 and When a Phone Is Not Enough
If I had to name the top GPS navigation apps of 2025 for cars and light vans, the list would be short: Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, and Sygic. Google and Apple are the defaults. Waze is useful for live traffic and hazard reports. Sygic is worth paying for when you need offline maps and a truck mode.
I am not going to pretend that phone apps are a complete replacement for dedicated GPS units. Phones die, mounts fail, and a phone app does not know that a 24-foot box truck cannot clear a bridge under repair. Use apps for final-mile directions and traffic rerouting. Use a truck GPS for the high-risk part of the route.
For vehicles where you do rely on a phone, download the offline maps before the trip. Check the map update at the start of each season. Stale offline maps are another version of not being prepared.

Step 4: For Trucks, RVs, and Boats, Add a Dedicated Navigation Layer
This step does not apply to a fleet made only of compact cars. It applies to oversized vehicles and anything that goes on the water.
For over-the-road equipment, we run Garmin truck GPS units in vehicles over 12,000 pounds. The reason is simple: route restrictions exist whether or not the cell network knows about them.
For boats, my role is limited to asking the right people. When we set up a survey boat, I told the marine installer that a phone would not be the primary navigation source. The Garmin marine system on that boat has a chartplotter at the helm and a backup camera at the transom. I do not install or configure systems like that myself. I know where my expertise ends.
Garmin marine electronics are a different universe from dashboard GPS devices. That is the point. If a unit is going to be used in open water, it should be chosen by someone who works with marine electronics professionally. A vendor who says a car GPS is good enough for a boat is a vendor I would not trust.
Checkpoint: any truck over 12,000 pounds or any watercraft has a navigation source that is not a smartphone.
Step 5: Store Emergency Gear Where Drivers Can Actually Reach It
This is the least interesting step. It is also where most emergency programs fail. I have opened the back of a cargo van where the emergency bag was buried behind bins, a folded hand truck, and a pallet jack. In a real roadside situation, no one moved all that cargo. They called roadside assistance. The bag may as well not have existed.
Keep the emergency bag in the cab or in an external compartment. If it has to stay in the load area, mount it to the wall near the door. Do not put it under a pile that a driver cannot lift.
This applies to jump starters too. A jump starter that is easy to grab gets used. One that lives in the warehouse gets forgotten.
Checkpoint: the driver can point to the emergency kit without opening the load bay or moving cargo.
Step 6: Test Everything Quarterly
Here is something most checklists will not tell you: a new emergency kit does not stay ready by itself. Lithium batteries lose charge. Memory cards corrupt. Offline maps expire. In September 2025, during our quarterly audit, 12 of 38 jump starters were below half charge. They had not been used; they had been sitting.
Now we book a 15-minute test session on the first Monday of every quarter. We check the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 footage, update offline maps, and run a charge cycle on every jump starter. That includes the Costco Type S units and the Vantrue JS1 units.
In hindsight, we should have started this process years earlier. Instead, we found out the hard way that one dash cam had stopped recording a month before an accident. It did not become a huge claim, but it cost us credibility. In our world, that is worse than the repair bill.

Two Mistakes That Undo a Good Kit
First, treating every vehicle the same. A delivery van in a city has different needs from a boat kept on a trailer. The vehicle list changes, so the equipment list should change with it.
Second, buying a pre-packaged emergency kit and never opening it. Pre-made kits are fine as a starting point, but they do not know whether your fleet runs in cold mountains, salt-air harbors, or dense urban areas. Spend the first hour after receiving a kit checking every item and deciding what to add.
If you build the kit around the steps above, you avoid the two most common failures: good gear stored in the wrong place and gear that is not ready when it is needed. That is the whole goal when a call comes at 6:00 p.m. on a Friday, the vehicle has what it needs.
